Monica’s Venice: Biennale Travel Tips

The Venice Biennale permeates every part of the city, with satellite projects in churches, cloisters, palazzos and buildings that only open for the event. The Biennale starts on 7th June and is well worth a visit. If you're thinking of heading there, here are my travel tips for what is one of my favourite cities.

STAY

The new Aman hotel is fabulous. Located in the 16th Century Palazzo Papadopoli, it has been lovingly restored, and they have really managed to keep the integrity of the building intact, frescoed ceiling and all. It gives you an incredible insight into how these palazzos were used. If you don't want to blow the budget, go for a drink in the bar on the beautiful piano nobile and arrive by boat for a grand entrance!

Another pick is Hotel Palazzo Barbarigo, a small, chic and affordable place to stay that's an easy walk away from my favourite galleries, the Guggenheim and the Academia, as well as the Rialto, Ca Rezzonico.

SHOP

Murano glass is a must. The colours are incredible. I recently ordered a set of glasses specially made for me, and I'm eagerly awaiting their arrival.

For some amazing jewellery visit Codognato in San Marco. I am a huge fan of their skull rings.

VISIT

There's so much to see, especially during the exhibition, but make sure you walk around the Cannaregio to discover hidden "campi" and a less touristy Venice. And stop by the fabulous Santa Maria dei Miracoli, a fine example of early Venetian Renaissance architecture.
